64 New Instruments For Your Soundblaster
"NEW.INS" is a file that can be loaded into Lyra. It will give
your Soundblaster 64 new instrument sounds.
The procedure for making use of these new sounds is as follows:
1. First, make an entry in the "events table". Select the
"Events" command in the MIDI menu. Type "New Ins", press the
down arrow key, type "new.ins", and press the ENTER key. Now you
have told Lyra that when it plays event 0, it should load a
Soundblaster instrument file in called "new.ins". The "New Ins"
is just a label which you can change to whatever you want.
2. Now enter an event marker into music at the point you want the
new instruments loaded. Most likely this will be at the start of
music. Select the "Events" command in the OPTION menu. Move the
cursor until the correct event number is highlighted (0 in our
case; notice that the event label "New Ins" shows up here) and
press the ENTER key. Move the cursor so it is on the staff and
press then ENTER key. You will see an "E0". This means "Event 0".
3. Set up the instrument table. This is done by selecting the
"Instruments" command in the MIDI menu. Type in "Soundblaster"
for the first line (this is actually optional); press the down
arrow and type in the number of the instrument you want (see the
table below), press the down arrow key once more and type in the
instrument name. Continue entering as many instruments as you
want and press the ENTER key when you're done.
4. Select one of the available instruments by entering an
instrument marker into music. This done the same way the event
marker was entered. This time, though, select "Instruments" in
the OPTION menu. Move the bar until the right instrument is
highlighted and press the ENTER key. Move the cursor to where you
want the instrument change to take place, and press the ENTER
key.
The file "NEW.LYR" has all of this done for you. In addition, a test
sequence of notes has been entered so you can audition the first
16 instrument sounds. If you want to listen to the remainder,
change the instrument table numbers.
Of course, make sure that you have correctly set up the
"Configure" command so that "MIDI device" is "SBLASTER-S" and the
correct "Address" is set. You don't need to worry about the
"Interrupt".
You can change to any of the 16 instruments in the instrument
table as often as you wish. Unfortunately, it is not possible at
this point to have more than one instrument sound playing at a
time. If you are interested in this capability, please let me
know and I'll see what can be done!
